Smudge pots originated in the early 1900s, when inventor W.C. Shue sought a solution to the freezes and frosts that had been plaguing orchard growers for years. The popularity of smudge pots surged following a devastating freeze in January of 1913, which wiped out the majority of crops.While the pots were a valuable addition to the orchards, the oil they used and the high number of Smudge pots created a large black cloud of smoke that made it difficult to breathe in the surrounding areas. Despite this, their positive impact on the orchards' harvest led to their continued use.

This dark cloud served a valuable purpose later on. During World War 2, the U.S. Navy and some of our adversaries utilized Smudge pots to safeguard important targets. The dense smoke created by these pots made it significantly more challenging for aircraft flying above to locate these targets.

Today, Smudge pots have become far less prominent in agriculture and the military. These days, they are most commonly found in your neighbor's backyard. Fortunately, you no longer need to be concerned about the dense black smoke, as advancements have been made over the years. Many Smudge pots now operate using grease or diesel. With such a diverse range of options available, they make the perfect addition to any patio or lawn space!
